Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – A temperamental lad

Tyrrell Hatton smashed a tee marker and was seen stepping on his club, as if to break it in half. And this was in a tournament in which he won. Imagine the pure, unfiltered damage he can do if he misses the cut.

2 – Phil’s brilliance

Apparently putting together a LIV Golf roster of Brendan Steele, Cameron Tringale, and Andy Ogletree wasn’t enough of a testimony to his savvy. Now, Phil Mickelson has also secured a team clothing deal to wear joggers. That’s right, joggers. Wild to think that one guy should possess so much business decorum, eh?

3 – We need answers

Most intriguing race going on in pro sports: The PGA Tour’s attempt to figure out slow play vs. the NFL’s bid to unlock the mystery of pass interference. Who gets there first?

4 – It’s a different game in January

There was zero buzz for this year’s college football finale, on January 20. Apparently, golf can’t compete against college football in September, but January is a different story.

5 – Give a nod to indoor golf

Should Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links GC triumph in the TGL – and that seems to be a big “if” – how long until his loyalists insist it is career win No. 83, surpassing Sam Snead for most in history. After all, they’ll claim indoor TGL has to be at least on par with the Nassau Open of 1937 or the White Sulphur Springs Open of ’38.

6 – Hey, it’s golf season

Count me as surprised that the inauguration wasn’t held at the turn during Monday’s golf at Mar-a-Lago Club.

7 – Sorry, cannot do

Personal vow: Never, ever, ever will I call it “the natty.” Good gracious, no, not ever. Title games deserve respect, not inane hip and cool nicknames.

8 – And it’s a $9.3m purse

Holy hole in the donut, Batman, it wasn’t that long ago when the PGA Tour season just about began at The Farmers Insurance Open because that’s where Tiger said it started. But now it’s a parade of WDs.

9 – Not her concern

Curious about what I was doing in the living room with a golf club, I explained to her that there was more room to continue my crucial work on an inside swing path. She pointed in another direction and suggested I work on my outside shovel path because that’s where the snow was. See what I'm up against?
