Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Pay them respect

On these cold, wet, raw winter days when you sit back and enjoy your warm coffee in the confines of your own home or office, think of those golf course superintendents and staffers who are outside tending to your golf course.

2 – Or thank them later

Then keep that in mind come late spring and early summer when you’re playing on relatively good turf. Perhaps a thank you would be in order?

3 – Tiger Who?

Little eye-opening to see just three of the world’s top 10 players (Scottie Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg, and Wyndham Clark) playing in Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge. ‘Twas a time when the field pretty much went from No. 1 to No. 20 with few misses. A testament to the obscene money these guys are getting that they can blow off this money-grab? An indication that the allegiance to Tiger isn’t what it once was? Or are the stars resting up for the debut of TGL?

4 – Sure sign the season is over

Sorry, but temporary greens are absurd.

5 – How ‘bout shaking hands and going home

My guess is a lot of major college football players missed the 11 a.m. agronomy class on Thursday at which time a professor explained that you cannot plant a flag in FieldTurf.

6 – There’s five aces in his hand

Dustin Johnson scoops up Thomas Pieters for his LIV Golf team, the 4Aces. Of course, that means there are now five Aces on the 4Aces which would not be OK in a poker game but since it’s LIV Golf all is well. We think. Or should we check with Pat Perez?

7 – Tops the music charts

Bing Crosby and David Bowie joining together for “Little Drummer Boy” will be played every day for the next three weeks. Thank you.

8 – Corcoran 5 and 4 over Bryson

He might be a You Tube sensation but Bryson DeChambeau is no Fred Corcoran. Much cooler than trying to make a hole-in-one with a wedge shot over your house, as Bryson did, Corcoran in 1941 arranged for a pair of golf matches between baseball icons who hated one another, Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. Quite the PR bonanza, Cobb winning in Boston and Ruth winning in New York generated much publicity and was way better theater than Bryson.

9 – My 6s and 7s are better seen by hand

Penmanship was my best subject in school and learning to write numbers clearly and distinctively was something I took seriously. So you won’t get me inputting my golf scores in those Golf Genius Apps. Nope. They'll be scripted nicely on my scorecard.
