Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Such a very important title

Advertised as breaking news: Justin Trudeau has accepted an invitation to serve as Honorary Chairman of the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal. Sort of dog-bites-man news, eh? Now if the leader of whatever country is hosting the Presidents Cup turned down the invitation, given that his team never wins, now that would be a news story.

2 – Took one look and it was daunting

Caddie asked if I wanted to study the putt from another angle, but I shook my head. Told him it only took one look to realize I had no shot at making it.

3 – How ‘bout we putt everything?

Speaking of putts, here’s the most laughable aspect to these international team games: Guys who can hit it on a string for 330 yards get upset because they are forced to putt a 4-footer.

4 – Old world

There’s something very cool about golf courses that are built next to train tracks.

5 – It’s a golf course, not a beach

Please be honest, some bunkers have too much sand, so why not remove the excess?

6 – Do you keep your home at 56 degrees?

We’re at that time of year when your golf clubs would prefer not to spend cool nights in the car trunk.

7 – Keeping fit

Oh, and if you don’t have shoe trees protecting your golf shoes, for shame.

8 – They deserve your respect

Hey, before the golf season completely gets away from us, you need to offer praise and thanks to your superintendent and his or her staff.

9 – You read it here first

When I’m put in charge, automatic qualifiers for the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup will be increased to nine. Captains will get just three picks. What’s more, you cannot get two captain’s picks in a row. If you’re a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup in an odd year, you can’t be a captain’s pick for the Presidents Cup in an even year. Too many good players to be committed to a clique.
