Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Love is in the air – and in the golf

When Jordan Spieth shot 268 for a share of fourth and Justin Thomas was one back and in a tie for sixth at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, it marked the first time they had both finished inside the top 10 since the 2023 WMPO. By itself, hardly stop-the-presses material, but feel free to use it to break the ice on your romantic Valentine’s Day dinner date. You know, something like this: “You hair looks beautiful. It has a magnificent shine to it the candlelight. Hey, and speaking of things that shine, how about Jordan and Justin both in contention this past weekend?”

2 – Slow? Not me

My guess is 91.3 percent of all PGA Tour members would say they aren’t slow. So there we go, problem solved. Slow play is a myth.

3 – Swinging away

Friend of mine asked if I were going to change my swing for 2025. “Which one? I’ve got six or seven of them in play at any given time.”

4 – Curious timing

One day after playing golf with President Trump, Tiger Woods withdraws from the upcoming Genesis Invitational. Have at it, all you theorists.

5 – Keyboard delight, the slashed O

Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard. Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgarrd. Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard. Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard. Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard. Hey, I could go on and on. Mostly to emphasize that these Great Danes are worth knowing, but partly to use this lovely keyboard function, the accent menu, on my MacBook Air.

6 – Wear your clothes, not your kids’

Jason Day’s sweat pants and Rickie Fowler’s matching camouflage shirt and pants makes you wonder if they’ve checked their birth certificates. They’re 37 and 36, respectively, and Beverly Hills 90210 is not longer.

7 – Grab some pine

How strong is Boston’s TGL team? By fielding Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama can’t even get off the bench. Of course, we’re not sure Hideki knows he’s on the bench, but that’s beside the point.

8 – Hip? Not really

People who actually comment and emphasize about a “club twirl” should just hold up a billboard that screams AREN’T I COOL? Club twirl? Give me a break.

9 – This look is encouraged

Then again, football players who actually hand the ball to an official . . . well, they are worth highlighting.
